Facility Details - BASIN STATION CABIN, MT

Overview

Basin Station Cabin is a rustic, two-room structure located in the Hebgen Lake District of the Gallatin National Forest. The cabin is open year-round and is accessible by car in the warmer months. The adjacent road is heavily traveled. Winter guests can snowshoe, ski or snowmobile to the cabin up to two miles from the nearest available parking.

Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Natural Features:

The cabin sits in an open meadow in the Upper Madison River Valley with views of distant evergreen forest and mountain peaks on all sides. It's situated within a couple miles of the South Fork Arm of Hebgen Lake, a man-made lake known for its excellent trout fishing.

The area around Basin Station Cabin is grizzly bear habitat, but it's also home to bison, elk and pronghorn. Otters are often spotted playing in the Madison River. Bird watchers can glimpse a variety of bird species in the area.

Recreation:

A trailhead is located just to the west of the cabin for hikers and equestrians. The trail leads into the forest and eventually connects with the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Winter activities in the area include cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

Nearby Hebgen Lake offers opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, biking and hunting. A public boat launch is located about two miles from the cabin.

Facilities:

The cabin is equipped with a double-bed platform and one set of bunk bed platforms. Wood stoves are available for heating and cooking. Basic pots and pans are provided, as well as dishes, an axe, shovel, broom, mop, and a table with chairs.

An outhouse is located outside and adjacent to the cabin. A campfire ring and a barn containing firewood are behind the cabin.

No water or electricity is available at the cabin. Guests must either bring drinking water or treat water they retrieve from natural sources. It is also recommended that guests bring their own cooking stove. Garbage bags are needed to pack out trash.

Mattresses for the beds are not provided. Items such as bedding, flashlights or lanterns with extra batteries, first aid supplies and extra toilet paper are also not available at the cabin.

Nearby Attractions:

The cabin is approximately nine miles from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park, which makes for an ideal day trip.

Know Before You Go

Renters must call for the cabin combination at the Hebgen Lake Ranger District office at (406) 823-6961, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m on the last business day before the arrival date; winter renters need to receive parking instructions
Water is not available in the cabin; guests need to bring their own or be prepared to treat water taken from a natural source

No garbage service; please bring garbage bags and pack out all trash and belongings
Candles are not permitted inside the cabin
Stock use at the cabin is discouraged due to lack of adequate space; stock and trailers can be kept outside the fenced yard
Hay and feed brought to the site must be certified weed-free
Please keep the gate in the fence between the cabin and barn closed; there may be horses in the pasture adjacent to the cabin and they could escape if the gate is not closed

Summer directions from West Yellowstone, proceed west on U.S. Highway 20 for approximately 6.5 miles. Turn right on the Denny Creek Road and continue approximately 2 miles north. The cabin is located on the right side of the road.

Winter directions from West Yellowstone, proceed west on U.S. Highway 20 for approximately 6.5 miles. Turn right on the Denny Creek Road. Parking is along the Denny Creek Road, where it meets the highway. Do not block access to the fire station or residences along the road. Proceed along the 2-mile trail to the cabin by skiing, snowmobiling, or snowshoeing.
