Description
Katmai National Monument was created in 1918 to preserve the famed Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a spectacular forty square mile, 100 to 700 foot deep ash flow deposited by Novarupta Volcano. A National Park & Preserve since 1980, Katmai is still famous for volcanoes, but also for brown bears, pristine waterways with abundant fish, remote wilderness, and a rugged coastline.

Katmai National Park is available for reservations through the NRRS Customer Service 1-888-448-1474 (within North America) or 518-885-3639 (outside of North America).
Note, that availability for Katmai is based upon occupancy, and the Brooks Camp campground can only accommodate up to 60 people per day.
You must travel to the campground using boat or float plane. Check in at the visitor center upon arrival. Each person is required to go through bear orientation (approx. 15 min). There is no telephone or email service at Brooks Camp. Park headquarters are located in King Salmon.
There is a 14 day stay limit per year; only 7 days may occur during the month of July.

July and September are prime bear viewing months. Close encounters with bears are common. All bears can be dangerous. Maintain at least 50 yards from all bears. Anglers must stop fishing or break fish off and move back as bears approach. Food may not be possessed along the Brooks River.
At peak bear times, Brook Falls trail may not be appropriate for those of limited mobility. Come prepared with insect protection. Cleaning fish at Brooks Camp is not allowed. A fish freezer is available. No cooking in fire rings, bring a stove. White gas is available at the Lodge Store.
Tent campers must store all food in the food cache located in the campground. Information on food storage will provided when checking in. Daily Ranger-led programs are available. Check the campground bulletin boards for schedules.
Brooks Lodge offers daily bus tours to the Valley of 10,000 Smokes. Reservations recommended. Showers are at the lodge for a fee. Bring all food; snacks only at lodge store. No propane available. You may also obtain meals, flightseeing trips, canoe and kayak rentals, and fishing guide services at the lodge. More information available at www.katmailand.com

Katmai is 290 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. There are daily commercial flights from Anchorage to King Salmon. Commercial air taxis fly daily, weather permitting, from King Salmon, Anchorage and Homer to Brooks Camp. Many individual lodges have their own transportation.
