Each year, people die falling through the ice from exposure or drowning, and a large portion of them are ice fishermen. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other public safety agencies often receive calls from people wanting to know if the ice is "safe". Of course, that is a very difficult question to answer, as ice is never 100 percent safe. Even during the coldest winter, ice conditions can vary greatly on the same body of water.
There are several things a person can do to increase their personal safety while enjoying time spent outdoors during the winter, including: 1. Create a plan, stick to it, and always let somebody know what you are doing, where you are going to be, and when you will be returning. 2. Dress in loose fitting layers, but, try to avoid cotton as an outer layer since it absorbs moisture. Wool and fleece are excellent choices for wicking away moisture. 3. Pack plenty of high energy food such as peanuts, jerky and granola. 4. Bring along water proof matches, dryer lint or fine steel wool and a candle, 5. Carry a cell phone. 6. If you are traveling on the ice bring either a spud bar or auger to check the thickness of the ice as you go.
The thickness of the ice can change from 12" to nothing within a few steps. Avoid ice formed over flowing water and currents such as streams and near bridges and culverts. The ice will be thinner and weaker in these areas. The General Guidelines for ice thickness and for accessing new, clear ice only are: 2"-4" for walking, 5" for ATV's and Snowmobiles, 8"-12" for Cars and Small Trucks, and 12"-15" for Medium Trucks. Most importantly, always wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket! In the event that you do break through the ice, a life jacket will help keep you afloat and may provide added warmth.
If you break through the ice you will also want a pair of ice picks to assist in pulling yourself out of the water. Ice picks can be purchased from most sporting goods stores, or you can make your own with two short pieces of broom handles with nails sharpened on both ends and joined together by a piece of strong line.
Have fun this winter, be safe, and stay alive; "ALWAYS, KNOW BEFORE YOU GO". Check with someone who is near the particular body of water where you are accessing. Bait shops, outfitters, game wardens, and public land managers are all valuable sources for ice condition updates. A public safety message from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
