FIVEMILE BUTTE LOOKOUT (OR), MT. HOOD NF - FS, OR

Description

Fivemile Butte Lookout sits at the 4627 foot elevation on Fivemile Butte. The 14' X 14' cabin sits atop a 40 foot tower and is surrounded by a wooden catwalk. The room is furnished with a small, single bed, a wood stove for heating, and a table and chair. It is equipped with a propane cook stove and a solar lighting system. An outhouse is located near by, as well as a shed stocked with firewood. A rope and pulley system is available to transport gear, as well as firewood, up and down the tower with ease. There is also a fire ring for campfires and barbecuing on site.

Alerts and Important Information

Logging activity is ongoing in the area until further notice. Entry to the lookout is by combination lock. Please call the Barlow Ranger District Office at 541-467-2291 for the combination 4 days prior to your reservation. Our office hours are 7:45am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday. The time frame for skiing into Fivemile Butte Lookout is approximately 4 hours. BE PREPARED for EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS. This is a good ski for moderate skiers. Forest Service Road (FSR) 44 and 4430 are closed from December 15th through March 15th, from the junction of FSR 44/4430 to Highway 35. During this time, visitors should park at Billy Bob Sno-Park. A Northwest Forest Pass is required for this Sno-Park. This closure allows no motorized traffic over 48" wide without a permit (CFR-MH 197-02-91). This is a shared winter recreation area. Visitors should expect Snowmobilers and other winter sports enthusiasts in the area. There is no potable water at this site. Visitors must bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking and washing. Please bring your own garbage bags and clean the facility before you leave. This is a "Pack it in, Pack it out" site. Please bring sleeping bags/bedding, as well as a flashlight or lantern for emergencies, first aid kit, washcloths and towels, and dish soap. All Forest Service Cabin Rentals are No Smoking facilities. Please contact the Ranger District prior to arriving at the cabin/lookout rental to check on any restrictions or conditions, such as fire or road closures, weather or storms, etc, that may affect the quality of your visit.

Fivemile Butte Lookout (OR) RD4430-120 Dufur, OR 97021 Location: SE 1/4 NE 1/4, Sec. 7, T.2S., R.11E., W.M., Wasco County, Oregon. Head west out of Dufur on Valley Road about 18 miles to the junction of FSR 44 and 4430 at Billy Bob Sno-Park (the road may be plowed to the Sno-Park). Follow FSR 44 to the junction of FSR 4430 and turn right on to FSR 4430-120, then turn left and follow to spur road 122. There is a gate that you will have to unlock (in winter months the gate is left open), then follow the 122 road to the end. The route is approximately 3 miles and is marked with orange and blue diamond shaped blazers. This route is not plowed, signed or patrolled.
