HILLTOP HIDEAWAY (OR), UMATILLA NF - FS, OR

Description

Hilltop Hideaway Cabin is located at historic Fremont Powerhouse complex. The surrounding valleys once teamed with mining activity, primarily gold. Around 1903, local mines began to notice a decline in earnings and promoted construction of a cheaper power source in an effort to operate the mines more economically. As a result, the Fremont Powerhouse was constructed and began operation in 1908. Two dams were constructed at Olive Lake and water from the lake was piped through an eight-mile-long wood and steel pipeline to the powerhouse to generate the much-needed electrical power. The houses were constructed to shelter workers who monitored the pipeline for breaks and kept the powerhouse operating.

Hilltop Hideaway is the house the farthest uphill of the Powerhouse. There is a small drive behind the two lower cabins that directly accesses the house. This cozy little cabin sleeps two and features one bedroom (with two captains beds), a full bath with hot and cold running water (during summer months only), a living room and kitchen.. It is fully furnished with a couch, table and chairs. The kitchen is equipped with an electric stove and oven, refrigerator and a wide variety of cooking utensils, dishes, cutlery, and silverware. Cleaning supplies are also provided. The cabin has electric lights throughout and is heated with an oil heater. A fire ring for outdoor barbecuing and campfires, as well as a picnic table, are located on site.

The cabins at Fremont Powerhouse are located near the historic town of Granite, OR. Nearby Olive Lake offers many recreational options, including boating, fishing, and swimming. Go hiking on North Fork John Day Wilderness trails and mountain biking on closed forest roads. Take a drive along the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway. Also enjoy berry picking (blackberries and huckleberries, depending on the season), bird watching, photography, wildlife viewing (watch for black bear, elk and deer) and the vast, incredible scenery.
