Overview

Kelly Forks Cabin is located within the Kelly Forks compound, an active Forest Service Work Center. It is believed to have been built in the mid-1930s, and was originally used as a stopover between the Upper North Fork and the Bungalow Ranger Station.

Peak season at the cabin is from mid-June through the end of September. It is accessible by car, but the last 31 miles of the drive are on narrow dirt roads that may be rocky and rutted.

The cabin provides many modern comforts, including electricity and indoor plumbing. Guests only need to bring a few of their own amenities to have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Natural Features:

The cabin sits in a small clearing surrounded by evergreen trees near the beautiful North Fork of the Clearwater River, a free-flowing river where trees and brush grow on the steep hillsides rising from the water's edge. Kelly Creek, known worldwide as a premium fishery for Westslope cutthroat trout, is just a stone's throw from the cabin.

Elk, white-tailed and mule deer, black bear, cougar, mountain goat and moose call this area home. They mostly roam at night but can occasionally be seen in the daytime.

Recreation:

Kelly Creek, a tributary of the North Fork of the Clearwater River, is one of Clearwater National Forest's popular fishing streams. Kelly Creek and all of its tributaries are protected by special regulations that allow catch-and-release fishing only. These rules are designed to preserve valued fly-fishing streams.

The North Fork of the Clearwater is popular for swimming and tubing. In the summer, guests can pick wild berries that grow in the vicinity. Other recreational activities in the area include hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Trail access is less than a mile from the cabin.

Facilities:

The cabin can sleep six people and comes with a full-size bed with mattress, two twin beds with mattresses and two queen-size futons. A flush toilet and shower are provided. The kitchen area is equipped with a propane cook stove, electric microwave, propane refrigerator, coffee maker and a table with chairs. A stove with a propane insert heats the cabin. Cooking pots, utensils, a broom and dustpan are provided. A picnic area is located just outside.

Items like bedding, pillows and towels are not provided. Guests are expected to tidy up the cabin before leaving.

Kelly Forks Cabin is secured by a combination lock, the code to open the lock will be provided upon receipt of payment
Outdoor fires are prohibited
Due to space constraints, there is assigned parking for a maximum of four vehicles at the facility (a truck with an ATV trailer is considered two vehicles); park only in designated, hardened parking spots to protect area resources
Tents, RVs and trailers are prohibited within the vicinity of the cabin

The cabin is approximately 48 miles northeast of the community of Pierce, Idaho. The last 31 miles to the cabin are narrow, have a dirt-surface and may be peppered with large ruts and rocks, so travel can be slow-going. Kelly Forks Cabin is also situated about 54 miles southwest of Superior, Montana.

From Lewiston, Idaho: Travel 45 miles west on U.S. Highway 12 to the bridge at Orofino, Idaho. Cross the bridge - don't deviate; you will travel on Michigan Avenue and then Grangemont Road, aka State Highway 7- and continue 30 miles north to the former Jaype Mill site. Turn right and continue 6 miles to the town of Pierce, Idaho. Drive through Pierce (approximately 3/4 mile) and turn left on French Mountain Road, also known as Forest Road 250. Remain on FR 250 for 48 miles until you reach the Kelly Forks Work Center.

From Superior, Montana: Travel 25 miles west on Forest Road 250, also known as the Trout Creek Road. You will cross the Hoodoo Pass at the Idaho-Montana stateline. Continue south on FR 250 for approximately 29 more miles until you reach the Kelly Forks Work Center. *NOTE: Hoodoo Pass rises to 6,000-ft elevation and is typically impassable due to snow from November until early July. This pass is not plowed and alternative access may be necessary until the snowpack melts through.

From Missoula, Montana: Travel 173 miles west on U.S. Highway 12 to the bridge at Orofino, Idaho.
