Inyo National Forest, CA

Overview

Inyo National Forest stretches across nearly 2 million acres of eastern California, between Los Angeles and Reno. The Forest contains pristine lakes, mountain meadows, winding streams, unique Jeffrey pine forests, rugged peaks of the Sierra Nevada and arid mountains in the Great Basin.

Special Areas


Several specially classified areas, include the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and nine congressionally designated wilderness areas. Devils Postpile National Monument, administered by the National Park Service, is located within Inyo National Forest in the Reds Meadow Valley area.

Summer


 

Moonlight FallsIn summer, anglers can try their luck at countless lakes and streams. Mammoth Mountain Ski Area becomes a mecca for mountain biking. Over1,200 miles of hiking and equestrian trails provide access to vast areas of wilderness. OHV enthusiasts have access to over 2,200 miles of routes. There are 107 campgrounds and picnic areas with thousands of individual sites.

 

Winter


Mammoth Ski AreaThe fun doesn’t stop when winter arrives. Some parts of the Inyo average up to 400 inches of snow annually! The forest is home to one of the largest ski resorts in the country. For Nordic skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers, there are over 100 miles of groomed trails. To really get away from it all, there are miles of ungroomed routes, and thousands of acres of backcountry skiing and snowshoeing opportunities.
