Firewood Ban: Beginning with the 2010 season Shenandoah National Park will implement a firewood ban. The destructive Emerald Ash Borer has been detected in nearby areas. In an attempt to slow its spread NO OUTSIDE FIREWOOD may be transported into Shenandoah. Campers must gather or purchase firewood within the park.

Loft Mountain Campground, Shenandoah National Park, VA

Description

Loft Mountain Campground is located near Milepost 80 on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, approximately two-and-a-half hours from Washington, DC. With nearly 200 campsites, Loft Mountain is a family oriented campground with access to hiking trails and concessionaire facilities. Campsites include a place for a tent or RV, a fire ring, and a picnic table. The RV dump station is located approximately one-half mile from the campground. Campsites are available on a first come, first served basis during the spring and fall shoulder seasons. Shenandoah National Park includes 300 square miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the southern Appalachians. The park rises above the Virginia Piedmont to its east and the Shenandoah Valley to its west. Two peaks within Shenandoah National Park, Stony Man and Hawksbill, exceed 4,000 feet. Popular activities include hiking, driving the scenic Skyline Drive, and observing wildlife.

Alerts and Important Information

RESERVATIONS: Reservations may be made up to six months in advance of your arrival, but no later than two days prior to your arrival.

FOOD STORAGE: Black bears and other wildlife inhabit the area. Food and coolers must be stored inside your vehicle. Regulations applying to the storage of food and garbage are strictly enforced.

HOOK UPS: There are no RV hook-ups at any park campground. An RV dump station with potable water is available.

GENERATORS: Generator use (60 decibel limit) is restricted to 8AM to 10 AM and 4PM to 7 PM. Sites where generators are prohibited, regardless of time, include all group sites, all walk-to sites, and sites F120 through F138 and G151 through G166.

QUIET HOURS: Quiet hours are in effect from 10 PM to 6 AM.

SITE LIMITS: A maximum of 2 tents and 6 persons are allowed per site.

ENTRANCE FEE: There is an entrance fee of $15 per vehicle (valid for 7 days) to enter Shenandoah National Park, in addition to camping fees.

There are four entrances into Shenandoah National Park and numerous gateway communities that offer services. The park's four entrances are located at:
  • Front Royal, accessible via I-66 and Route 340
  • Thornton Gap, accessible via Route 211
  • Swift Run Gap, accessible via Route 33
  • Rockfish Gap, accessible via I-64 and Route 250
  • From Washington, D.C. Metro Area
  • Travel west on Interstate 66 to exit 43A (32 miles). Take US Highway 29 South approximately 55 miles to Ruckersville, Virginia. Take US Highway 33 West to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive Swift Run Entrance (15 miles). Take Skyline Drive south approximately 15 miles and turn left into the Loft Mountain area. Follow the signs to Loft Mountain Campground.

  • From Richmond, Virginia Area
  • Travel west on Interstate 64 to exit 99 for Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive (90 miles). Take Skyline Drive north approximately 25 miles and turn right into the Loft Mountain area. Follow the signs to Loft Mountain Campground.

  • From Winchester ,Virginia Area
  • Follow I-81 South approximately 65 miles to Exit 247 for US Highway 33 East. Take US Highway 33 East and follow approximately 21 miles to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive (Swift Run Entrance). Take Skyline Drive south for approximately 15 miles and turn left into the Loft Mountain area. Follow the signs to Loft Mountain Campground.

  • From Staunton, Virginia Area
  • Travel east on Interstate 64 to exit 99 for Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive (12 miles). Take Skyline Drive north approximately 25 miles and turn right into the Loft Mountain area. Follow the signs to Loft Mountain Campground.
