Facility Details - LOWER TWILIGHT GROUP SITE, AZ

Overview

Lower Twilight Group Site offers groups a secluded camping escape from the summer desert heat. The scenic mountain setting is a great base for hiking, wildlife viewing and picnicking. The facility sits along the Swift Trail in southeastern Arizona, adjacent to Upper Twilight Group Site.

Natural Features:

At an elevation of 7,400 feet, the campground lies beneath a nice canopy of ponderosa pine trees in the scenic Pinaleño Mountains in Coronado National Forest. Temperatures are very pleasant in summer compared to the heat of surrounding lowers deserts.

The national forest covers 1.78 million acres of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Elevations range from 3,000 to 10,720 feet in 12 widely scattered mountain ranges, or "sky islands," that rise dramatically from the desert floor, supporting biologically diverse plant communities.

Recreation:

The Pinaleño Mountains boast great hiking, and campers can find trails nearby. The area's diverse habitat makes this a popular spot for birding. Groups also enjoy picnicking under the shade of pine trees.

Facilities:

Lower Twilight can accommodate a single group of up to 50 people for camping. Parking is available for up to six vehicles. Vault toilets are located at Upper Twilight Group Site, a short walk away.

Downed firewood may be collected in and around the campsite. An information board is located at Upper Twilight for any important information on either site.

Nearby Attractions:

The Mount Graham Wilderness Study Area, which includes the 10,720-foot Mount Graham and several trails, is close by.

No drinking water provided; visitors must bring their own
Total vehicle length less than 40 feet; Highway 366 is steep with a high number of switchbacks and a one-lane curved bridge at Wet Canyon

No trash cans available; remove trash from the forest prior to leaving the campsite

Check-in is at 2 p.m.; check-out is at noon
Only downed trees and shrubs may be collected as firewood; tree-cutting is prohibited
This is a high elevation facility; please use caution when traveling from lower elevations
Bears live in the area; make sure all food and trash is secure

From Safford, Arizona, take State Route 191 south for 6 miles. Turn right onto State Route 366/Swift Trail and travel 14.5 miles to the turnoff on the right. Continue a mile to campsite. 1 mile to campsite.

From Tucson, Arizona, Take I-10 east for 90 miles. Take exit 352 for State Route 191, and turn left toward Safford. Drive 26.3 miles north and turn left on State Route 366/Swift Trail. Drive 14.5 miles to the turnoff on the right, and continue a mile to campsite.
