OverviewOpal beach was created in 1995 when Hurricane Opal flattened sand dunes to create a smooth, sandy stretch of beach. Today, you can relax and enjoy a day of picnicking along the white sands. The covered picnic area faces the azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico, with limitless opportunities for beach activities. The area is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore on Santa Rosa Island. Santa Rosa is a 40-mile barrier island once explored by Spanish Conquistadors in the early 16th century.
Opal Beach is on Santa Rosa Island between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach. The beach stretches along the gulf side of Santa Rosa Island, a barrier island that borders the Pensacola Bay to the west and the Choctawhatchee Bay to the east.
Bring a volleyball or football for sports in the sand or seek out photography opportunities among the many sea birds, migratory birds, or sea turtles.
Each cluster has four pavilions and four tables per pavilion. The A Cluster and E Cluster, each seat 100 and are reservable for day use. Bring your own grill and note that there are no electric outlets or lights.
Explore neighboring beach areas like Navarre Beach Park, or head to historical Fort Pickens to explore the military fort built for added protection after the War of 1812. Take a short drive and visit the lighthouse and museum at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola.
