ALL (1) OverviewSheephorn Lookout is perched on 8,159-foot Sheephorn Mountain and was used as a Forest Service fire lookout until the late-1980's. The current structure was built in the 1960s, but the first lookout on the mountain was built in 1933.Natural Features:A catwalk surrounds the structure, which sits atop a set of about 30 steps. It offers expansive panoramic views of the landscape below, including the Salmon-Challis National Forest and the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Recreation:Hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and off-road enthusiasts will find several motorized and non-motorized trails in the surrounding area. Click here for an Idaho OHV safety message. Facilities:The small 16-by-16 room can sleep a maximum of two people on two single beds with mattresses. No linens or bedding are provided. A wood stove, firewood, table, two chairs, broom, axe, fire extinguisher and a shovel are provided. Guests must bring their own dishes, utensils, cookware and drinking water. Getting There:GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude):44.88278, -114.09111 44°52'58"N, 114°5'28"W From Salmon, travel south on Highway 93 for 23 miles to Iron Creek Bridge. After crossing the bridge, immediately turn right and continue on Forest Road 045 approximately 3 miles to a left turn on Forest Road 083/Peel Tree Road. Follow Forest Road 083 for 10 miles to Sheephorn Saddle and the intersection with Forest Road 050. Take Forest Road 050 for 5.4 miles to parking area for lookout.
