ALL (0) OverviewSheepshead Mountain Recreation Area provides a beautiful backdrop for weddings, receptions, large family gatherings and group picnics. It is in the heart of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and is a great place to take advantage of the great outdoors.Natural Features:The area is an expanse of grassy meadows and sagebrush, with several streams and a small lake, all surrounded by a dense lodgepole pine forest. The natural setting has been adapted with features and facilities that are accessible to almost everyone. Recreation:The area is known for its pleasant picnicking amenities, but it is also popular for large group gatherings including games, hiking, fishing and enjoying nature. Facilities:The picnic shelter can accommodate up to 200 people. It is equipped with multiple tables, campfire circles and grills. Additional tables sit around the shelter, some with grills available. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Nearby Attractions:The city of Butte is about 20 miles from the picnic area. A variety of services are available there. To make reservations, contact the Butte Ranger District by calling (406) 494-2147. Reservations cannot be made online. Getting There:GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude):46.15556, -112.465 46°9'20"N, 112°27'54"W From Butte, travel Interstate 15 north for about 13 miles to the Elk Park exit. Turn left off the ramp and continue under the overpass to Forest Service Road 442 and continue driving for 6 miles. The Sheepshead Recreation Area is on the right.
