Overview

Sherando Lake Recreation Area's Family Campground provides an ideal camping destination. It is situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known locally as the jewel of the mountains, where visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming and relaxing on the sandy beach.

Natural Features:

The campground sits between Sherando Lake and Upper Sherando Lake at an elevation of about 1,800 feet. Upper Sherando is the largest, encompassing 25 acres of cool waters. Both lakes are fed by the South Fork Back Creek.

Recreation:

Upper Sherando Lake is a fisherman's haven that does not allow swimming. The Lower Lake is ideal for a mixture of swimming, boating and fishing. Fishing licenses are required to fish on either lake.

Many hiking opportunities abound, including the Blue Loop Trail, the Lakeside Trail and the Torry Ridge Trail that heads to Bald Knob.

Weekend campfire programs are held at the amphitheater Memorial Day through Labor Day. Other events include a kid's fishing day in May and Smokey Bear's Birthday Celebration in August.

Facilities:

The campground is divided into three loops: Meadow Loop has campsites with electric hookups; White Oak Loop is has non-electric campsites; River Bend Loop and the upper part of White Oak have first-come, first-served sites.

Each site is equipped with a picnic table, lantern post and campfire ring with grill. Modern showers, flush toilets and drinking water spigots are located throughout the campground.

Nearby Attractions:

The nearest groceries and fuel are located in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, about 15 minutes from the recreation area.

A golf course and ski resort with wonderful scenic overlooks are within 10 miles of Sherando Lake. Other attractions include the Farm Implement Museum, a fish hatchery and horseback rides.

From I-64, take Exit 96 just east of Stuarts Draft. Go south on State Route 624, which becomes State Route 664 at Lyndhurst. Continue south on State Route 664 approximately 8 miles to the entrance to the Sherando Lake Recreation Area on the right. The gatehouse is approximately 0.5 miles ahead. If the gatehouse is closed, continue through the recreation area to White Oak Loop A, which is the first turn to the right after passing the lake. Meadow Loop C is the last loop on the left before reaching the play field.
