Overview

Silvermine is a tent-only group camp, tucked beneath a stand of poplars and hemlocks near the banks of the French Broad River in Pisgah National Forest. Campers enjoy the soothing sound of the rushing river and views of the surrounding mountains.

Named for the nearby remnants of an old silver mine, the campground can accommodate up to 50 people and offers a variety of recreational and sightseeing activities.

Natural Features:

The Pisgah National Forest is a land of mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls and heavily forested slopes. The Pisgah is primarily a hardwood forest with whitewater rivers and waterfalls.

Within a half-mile of the Silvermine Campground hikers can find rhododendron-covered slopes, pine forests where brilliant fire pink blooms, cliffs covered with native cactus and bluets flowering near the French Broad River.

Recreation:

There are several hiking trails near the campground. Hikers can access the 4.2-mile Pump Gap loop directly from the campground, which crosses the Appalachian Trail.

A popular hike is to the top of Lover's Leap. This 1.6-mile trail intersects with the Pump Gap loop and provides scenic views of the French Broad River from Lover's Leap Ridge.

Anglers can fish in the French Broad River. It's also popular for kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting.

Facilities:

The camp is equipped with a picnic shelter with two picnic tables, as well as a group grill and fire ring. Drinking water and vault toilets are provided.
