Snyder Guard Station (WY)
Snyder Guard Station is located in beautiful Snyder Basin, 22 miles west of Big Piney, Wyoming. The cabin makes an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to hike, mountain bike, horseback ride or fish. Photographers are enchanted by the region's landscape and opportunities for wildlife watching.
Open year-round, the cabin provides a horse corral for equestrian campers and allows pets as well. Winter access is by snowmobile, snowshoes or cross-country skis on a 10-mile trail.
The rustic log cabin sleeps four people and has propane heat and propane lights. A wood burning stove was installed in 2018 to help with the heat. A vault toilet is located outside next to the building. Two bunk beds with mattresses are provided, as well as two dressers, a cabinet, and two chairs. The kitchen is equipped with a propane cook stove, a variety of cookware and utensils, a table with four chairs, a refrigerator and a sink. No electricity is available, guests must bring their own supply of water for drinking and cooking. Need to Know
- Entry requires a Signed Contract that will be emailed to you about 2 weeks prior to reservation date. when contract is signed and emailed back to the Ranger District Office, you will receive a combination to the lock to enter into the guard station. You MUST have a copy of the signed contract "permit" with you to stay at the gaurd station.
- Do not use wood cook stove
- Winter access is by only snowmobile, snowshoes or skis on a 10-mile trail; part of this trail is not groomed
- Summer access is on gravel and dirt roads; high clearance vehicles are strongly recommended
- Livestock may be kept in the corral northwest of the cabin
- Hay must be certified weed free
- Please bring garbage bags; this is a 'pack it in, pack it out' facility
- Please clean cabin before leaving; Broom/dust pan and mop are provided, you will need to bring all cleaning supplies; rags, towels, dish soap and whatever you will need to clean with.
- No cell phone coverage available
- No smoking allowed
- Bears frequent the area; be aware of bear safety
- Beware of poisonous chemicals used to control rodent population
- Please include a current phone number with your reservation so the the District Office can contact you if any unforeseen issues arise with the cabin or your reservation.

- There is NO running water, camper MUST bring own water supply.
Natural Features
The cabin sits in a grassy meadow surrounded by pine trees at an elevation of 8,000 feet. The cabin compound provides views of picturesque peaks including Riley Ridge.
Moose, elk, eagles and sandhill cranes are among the wildlife likely to be seen. An abundance of wildflowers color the landscape in summer.
The Bridger-Teton National Forest offers more than 3.4 million acres of public lands for outdoor recreation. With its pristine watersheds, abundant wildlife and immense wildlands, the forest comprises a large part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest intact ecosystem in the lower 48.
Nearby Attractions
Wyoming Peak is located close by for those that like to hike. Middle Piney Lake, North Piney Lake are great fishing sites along with many near-by creeks. .
Recreation
The Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail can be accessed nearby within the basin, offering exciting hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding opportunities. Nearby streams provide trout fishing.
In winter months, nearly 100 miles of snowmobile trails are open for exploring. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are other popular cold weather activities.

Driving Directions
From Kemmerer, WY, take US-189 north for 68.5 miles to Big Piney. Turn left onto State Highway 350 (main street in Big Piney), heading west from Big Piney. After about 10 miles, the pavement ends and the road forks. Take the left fork on Fish Creek Rd and drive about 12.5 miles. Shortly after crossing South Piney Creek, there is a "Y" intersection. Take the right fork and travel about 0.5 mile to the guard station. The bunkhouse is on the left.
