Overview

Brushy Creek Campground is situated along the banks of Lake O' the Pines in the piney woods of east Texas, near the border of Louisiana.

Natural Features:

Lake O' the Pines includes about 18,700 acres of water and 9,000 acres of land, encompassing an area so large it spans five counties.

The lake was created by the construction of the Ferrell's Bridge Dam on the Big Cypress Bayou. The reservoir was originally created as part of the overall plan for flood control in the Red River Basin below Denison Dam in Oklahoma, and has now become a recreational oasis for outdoor enthusiasts.

Recreation:

Birders are encouraged to bring their binoculars as Brown-headed Nuthatches are unusually common in the large pine trees found all around the lake. Along the water, rare gulls including Sabine's, Thayer's, Great Black-backed, and Laughing Gulls, make their home. Visitors should also watch overhead for Bald Eagles.

Lake O' the Pines fishing includes largemouth, smallmouth and hybrid bass along with crappie, sunfish and catfish. In addition to boat fishing there are areas for bank fishing along the shore and below the dam along Big Cypress Bayou.

The surrounding 4,500 acres of federally owned property includes excellent hunting opportunities. In addition, the lake surface provides some of the best waterfowl hunting in East Texas.

Facilities:

Alley Creek features 76 spacious campsites, ranging from more primitive tent sites to full-hookup RV sites.

A boat ramp, playground and swimming beach are provided, and most of the campsites offer sweeping views of the lake.

Nearby Attractions:

The nearby towns of Jefferson and Marshall offer plenty of historic and tourist attractions, and Texas Wildflower Trail routes are located along the roads surrounding the lake.
