Paynes Creek is an ideal campground for families and groups of friends looking to stay at Hartwell Lake, one of the largest and most popular lakes in the Southeast. The facility boasts a sandy swimming beach, boat ramp and a children's playground.

Natural Features:

Paynes Creek Campground is on the Tugaloo River arm of Hartwell Lake. The lake covers nearly 56,000 acres with a shoreline of 962 miles. Over 20,000 acres of public land surrounds the lake, which creates a border between Georgia and South Carolina.


Boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing and jet skiing are popular activities on Hartwell Lake. Visiting also enjoy exploring local hiking and biking trails.


The campground offers 43 campsites, 37 of which have waterfront access. All sites have 50-amp electrical hookups and water. A swimming beach and playground are on-site.

Nearby Attractions:

The Chattahoochee and Nantahala National Forests are northwest of the lake, providing additional recreational activities, such as hiking, fishing, hunting and canoeing.

  • Gates open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m.
  • Same day reservations are allowed

From I-85, take GA Exit 177, proceed south on GA Highway 77 for 5 miles. Follow directional signs last 10 miles to the campground.

From Hartwell, GA, take Highway 51 north until you reach a four-way stop; turn left and follow directional signs to the campground.
