BWCAW Permit Reservation Policies

The National Recreation Reservation Service™ (NRRS™) is your one-stop reservation resource for the recreation facilities and activities offered by the US Army Corps of Engineers, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and USDA Forest Service.

Reserving Permits

You can reserve permits in advance for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) offered through the NRRS™:

The Lottery

The BWCAW lottery was initiated well over a decade ago in order to fairly distribute available quotas for entry dates and entry points where demand exceeds availability. The permit reservation process starts each year when lottery applications for permit reservations may be submitted through Recreation.gov beginning December 1. Applications submitted via Recreation.gov will be accepted through January 15. All applications submitted during this period will be processed by lottery (regardless of the order received).

FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED On January 20, following the lottery, first-come, first-served reservation processing will begin via Recreation.gov. Phone reservations will be accepted beginning February 1.

Policies

RESERVATION FEE A $6.00 non-refundable reservation fee is required for each reserved permit.

OVERNIGHT USER FEE When making advanced reservations, you will be given the option to pay for the entire group or charged a minimum of $32.00 for 2 adults. You will also have the option of changing the group size through Recreation.gov within a two day window prior to the entry date.

Method of Payment

Recreation.gov accepts several methods of payment to accommodate your needs, including VISA, Master Card, Discover/Novus and American Express. Please see the below table for additional methods of paying for NRRS™ reservations or contact customer service at 888-448-1474.

Change and Cancellation Policy:

If a BWCAW reservation is cancelled outside the 2-day window prior to your entry date, the user fees paid by the card holder will be fully refunded. If cancelled within the 2-day window, $32.00 for 2 adults is retained and additional payments will be refunded. The Forest Service will retain the entire payment if the group is a no show. A new confirmation letter will be generated each time a change is made. Adjustments to group sizes can be made through Recreation.gov or at the permit issuing station as needed. The $6.00 reservation fee is non-refundable. Cancellations to the reservations can be made via Recreation.gov or by calling the BWCAW Reservation Center. (Call 1-877-444-6777, March 1 - Oct 31 - 9:00 am - 11:00 pm, Nov 1 - Feb 28 - 9:00 - 9:00 pm)

Emergency closures: In event of an emergency closure, the NRRS will attempt to notify the group leader to offer alternate dates and entry points. If this is not possible, all fees paid will be refunded.

Transfer Policy: BWCAW reservations are not transferable.

Confirmation Policy: Payment is required to confirm all individual reservations. Confirmation letters are sent via email or by U.S. Postal Service.

Refunds: Refunds due to cancellation will be returned within 48 hours if paid by credit card. No refunds will be distributed for no-shows.

Reservation Fee: A $6.00 non-refundable reservation fee is required for each reserved permit.
Service Fee: Currently, no service fees apply.
Bankcard Purchases: Refunds for bankcard payments will be issued as a credit to your bankcard.

Discounts:Holders of the Interagency Senior and Access Passes (and the Golden Age and Access Passes) may receive a 50% discount on their user fee, not the entire group. All cards (Interagency Senior/Access Pass Owners, or Seasonal) must be presented at the time of permit pickup to receive a discount, otherwise the full fee will be charged.
Interagency Senior/Access Passes can be purchased at any National Forest Office for $10.00 for citizens who are age 62 or older. Access Pass cards are available for free. Proof of medically determined permanent disability or eligibility for receiving benefits under federal law must be shown.

You can reserve permits in advance for the Middle Fork Salmon River offered through the NRRS™:

High Use Control Season Lottery Permits

The Middle Fork River permit lottery was initiated 30 years ago in order to fairly distribute available quotas for entry dates where demand exceeds availability during the high use season of May 28 through September 3. The permit reservation process starts each year when lottery applications for permit reservations may be submitted through Recreation.gov beginning December 1. Applications will only be accepted online via Recreation.gov through January 31. All applications submitted during this period will be processed by lottery (regardless of the order received).

Pre and Post Season Reservations

For reservations outside the lottery time period, a FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED process begins on October 1. First-come, first-served reservation processing will begin via Recreation.gov. Phone reservations through Recreation.gov will be accepted for dates during the pre and post season.

Reservations can be requested after March 15th for any remaining open launch dates of the Controlled season through Recreation.gov or by calling Recreation.gov call center.

Wild Section Snake River Permit Reservation Policies

You can reserve permits in advance for the wild section of the Snake River through the NRRS™:

Control Season Lottery Permits

The wild section of the Snake River permit lottery was initiated 30 years ago in order to fairly distribute available quotas for entry dates where demand exceeds availability during the high use season of the Friday preceding Memorial Day through September 10. The permit reservation process starts each year when lottery applications for permit reservations may be submitted through Recreation.gov beginning December 1. Applications will only be accepted online via Recreation.gov through January 31. All applications submitted during this period will be processed by lottery (regardless of the order received).

Designated Non-motorized Periods: Wild River non-motorized periods have been established for the section between Wild Sheep Rapids and the upper landing at Kirkwood Historic Ranch. These periods are Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday beginning the first Monday in June and continuing every other week through the end of August. If the July 4th holiday falls in a non-motorized period, the non-motorized period will be the following week and every other week thereafter.

Pre and Post Season Reservations

Self issue permits are required outside of the control period for private non-commercial floaters. These launch permits must be picked up at the launch site.

The Snake River will no longer maintain a call in waiting list after the Lottery has been completed and reservations have been allocated starting from 2010 reservation season.

Enchantment Permit Area

Permit Fees, Changes, and Cancellations Policy:

Reserving Permits

The Enchantment Permit system was initiated nearly thirty ago, in order to fairly distribute the limited number of permits available under quotas established by the Alpine Lakes Area Land Management Plan of 1981. These permits are required for all overnight use in the Enchantment Permit Area portion of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness between June 15th and October 15th. You can reserve permits in advance for the Enchantment Permit Area through the NRRS™ in the following ways:

The Lottery

The permit reservation process starts for the coming summer when lottery applications for permit reservations are accepted by Recreation.gov beginning February 28th . Applications submitted via Recreation.gov will be accepted through March 20th. All applications submitted during this period will be randomly processed by lottery (regardless of the order received). Nearly 75% of all available permits for the five Permit Zones that make up the Enchantment Permit Area are distributed through this lottery.

Reservations On A First-Come, First-Served Basis

On April 13th, following completion of the lottery confirmation process, first-come, first-served reservation processing will begin via Recreation.gov. Phone reservations will also be accepted beginning April 13th. Any portion of the permit quota available to lottery applicants that were not issued will be available for purchase at this time. Also, any cancellations made throughout the season will be made available on an ongoing basis.

Day of Entry "Walk-in" Permits

Additional permits are also available during the June 15 - October 15 season each morning at the Wenatchee River Ranger Station, at 7:45AM, Monday-Saturday. These permits are not reservable, and are very limited in number. They are good only for entry on the same day that they are issued.

A $6.00 non-refundable application fee is required for each lottery application or reserved permit.

To confirm a reservation, you must make full payment of the permit fee, charged at the rate of $5.00 per person per day (per DAY, not per night.) Once a reservation is confirmed, you may not change the entrance date or overnight camping zone of that permit.

Once a Permit Reservation is confirmed, no changes may be made to the zone for which the permit is valid.

Once a Permit Reservation is confirmed, no changes may be made to the entry date.

15 days or more prior to the entry date, days may be added to the trip by changing the exit date at the rate of $5/person/day.

15 days or more prior to the entry date, groups size may be increased, up to the limit of 8 total persons per group, at the rate of $5/person/day.

No changes will be allowed within 14 days of the trip's start.

Cancellations:

If an Enchantment Area Permit reservation is cancelled 22 days or more prior to the entry date, a $10 cancellation fee will be charged, and the remainder of the permit fee will be refunded.

Permit reservations cancelled less than 21 days of the entry date will forfeit the entire permit fee.

If you are unable to use your permit, please take the time to cancel your reservation through Recreation.Gov or the NRRS reservation line, even when a refund is not due, so that another group will have a chance to book a permit. Cancellations to a reservation can be made via Recreation.gov or by calling the NRRS reservation line at 1-877-444-6777

Emergency closures: In event of an emergency closure, the NRRS will attempt to notify the group leader to offer alternate dates and entry points. If this is not possible, all permit fees paid will be refunded.

Transfer Policy: Permit Reservations and Permits are not transferable.

Confirmation Policy: Successful Lottery Permit Reservations not confirmed by April 12th will be considered void, and will be re-issued to another group. All reservations are considered to be confirmed once payment is made.

Permit Pick-up: Permits must be picked up in person from the Wenatchee River Ranger Station. Permits not claimed by 9:00AM on day of departure will be considered "no-shows", and will be re-issued to another group unless prior arrangements have been made with ranger station staff.

Refunds: Refunds due to cancellations made more than 21 days prior to date of departure will be returned within 48 hours if paid by credit card. No refunds will be distributed for cancellations within 21 days of departure, or no-shows.

Bankcard Purchases: Refunds for bankcard payments will be issued as a credit to your bankcard.

Discounts: There are no discounts that can be applied to the Enchantment Area Permits.

Cables on Half Dome

Permit Fees, Changes, and Cancellations Policy:

This hiking reservation is transferable. You can give a permit to anyone else, but each permit can only be used once. Permits cannot be resold or auctioned.

Cancellation Policy: The Half Dome permit is non-refundable. However, if you cancel a permit, someone else may be able to use it. Once a permit is cancelled, it becomes available via Recreation.gov. You may cancel a permit until midnight the evening before the permit date.

Permit holders are responsible to understand and follow all the terms and conditions of the permit.

Desolation Wilderness

Policy and Fee Information

Reserving Permits:
You can reserve Desolation Wilderness overnight permits up to 6 months in advance of your planned date of entry through the NRRS.

Reservation Fee:
A $6.00 non-refundable reservation fee is required for each overnight permit reserved.

Overnight Use Fee:
A per person use fee is charged for your group when making a reservation for a Desolation Wilderness Overnight Permit. The maximum fee charged per permit is $100, not including the reservation fee.

Change Fee:
A $5 change fee, in addition to the per person permit fee, will be charged for change the number of people to your group.

Annual Fee Cards:
An annual pass for Desolation Wilderness Overnight Permit fees may be purchased for $20.00 in person at Forest Service permitting offices. The Annual Pass fulfills the overnight user fee requirements for one calendar year from date of purchase but the holder will still need to obtain a permit and pay the $6.00 reservation fee if reserved in advance. America the Beautiful (ATB) Interagency Passes, including Senior, Access and Annual Pass, do not apply to Desolation Wilderness Overnight Permits

Parking:
Pyramid Creek and Eagle Falls Day Use Areas are subject to a separate $5 day use fee, which is waived for overnight permit holders. Overnight reservations that have these trailheads as their entry or exit trailhead will receive a parking pass as part of their permit. You must print the parking pass and place it on the dash of your vehicle if parking in these popular day use areas. You may be fined if your pass is not properly displayed.

Change and Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations:
If you cancel your reservation at least 16 days prior to your entry date, all use fees collected will be refunded. The $6.00 reservation fee is non-refundable for all reservations. If you cancel your reservation 15 days or less prior to the entry date, none of the fees will be refunded.

No Show Policy:
If you do not cancel and decide not to use your reservation, none of the fees will be refundable. Please cancel your reservation if you are unable to use it as this opens quota space for others.

Change Policy:

Changes to your permit are allowed if they are made greater than 14 days before your date of entry. Once your permit is available to print, no changes will be allowed (refer to cancellation policy).
Change in the number of people with same dates and destination zone: log onto the website or contact the call center to make changes. A $5.00 change fee will apply (if you are increasing your party size, additional use fees will apply).
Changing the date of entry, the number of days, or the first night destination zone: cancel your current permit and reserve a new permit. A $6.00 reservation fee will apply to the new permit reservation.

Emergency Closures:
In the event of an emergency closure, the NRRS will make every attempt to contact the group leader and offer alternate dates and/or destination zones if available. If this is not possible, then all fees will be refunded.

Denali National Park

Road Lottery Policy and Fee Information

Background on the Denali Road Lottery
Since the construction of the Parks Highway in 1972, access to the interior of the park has mainly limited to bus service. Beginning in the early 70's, anyone who wanted to could drive the road after the bus system shut down for the season, which at that time was right after Labor Day. In those early years, only a few intrepid souls braved the poor roads to get here and drive into the park. As the years went by, the popularity of this opportunity to visit the park in late autumn grew. In 1989's the "open to all comers" offer became unmanageable, when the park received an unprecedented number of visitors one weekend. During one day over 1600 vehicles drove the road. Wildlife was injured, there was bumper to bumper traffic, problems with pets and wildlife, safety concerns because of low visibility created by dust, etc.. In 1990, park management implemented a lottery people could enter for a chance to drive the road over a period of four days after the bus season ended.

Entering the Lottery
Entries are accepted from June 1st to June 30th. All entries must be completed by June 30th to be included in the drawing. Winners are selected and notified on July 15th. Only one entry per person is allowed and there is a fee of $10 per entry.

Fees
A non-refundable lottery entry fee of $10 will be charged to each applicant. Those selected for a Road Lottery Permit will be charged an additional $25 road travel permit fee at the time of the lottery drawing. A $20 vehicle park entrance fee is payable when you arrive to pick up the Road Lottery Permit at the Wilderness Access Center. Change and Cancellation Policy:
The $10 per Lottery Application entry fee is not refundable.

If the park is unable to open the road past the Teklanika Rest Area (Mile 30) before 2pm, the $25 Road Lottery permit fee will be refunded. In no other circumstances will there be refunds. If you transfer your permit (see below), we will not refund the $25 Road Lottery permit fee and charge the new person .

If you are not able to use the permit, you can transfer it to someone else. Please provide the person you are transferring the permit to a written transfer letter that includes your name, date for which you were selected and the name of the person that will be using the permit.
