Great Outdoors Month
Plenty to love about getting outside in June!
What You’ll Find
Memorial Day Weekend kicks off the summer outdoor recreation season across the country. Throughout the month of June and into July for the Independence Day holiday, thousands of events and activities welcome visitors to America’s public lands during Great Outdoors Month!
You won’t need to travel too far or wait too long to find a location with plenty of recreation opportunities available. Whether you are new to outdoor recreation, or an enthusiast, there is something for everyone:
- National Kids to Parks Day (Saturday before Memorial Day weekend)
- National Trails Day (first Saturday in June)
- National Fishing & Boating Week (first week in June)
- National Get Outdoors Day (second Saturday in June)
- National Marina Day (second Saturday in June)
- Great American Backyard Campout (fourth Saturday in June)
- Great Outdoors America Week (fourth week in June)
There are reservable and first-come, first-served campsites located on federal and state lands in every state. Visit Recreation.gov to search for campsites, cabins, even fire lookouts near you. Visit America’s State Parks to discover camping opportunities within state parks as well.
Make Sure You
Take lots of pictures and then share them! Enter the Share the Experience photo contest which is a chance for amateur photographers to submit inspiring images of America’s federal lands, national parks, forests, waterways and historical sites to win cash prizes, outdoor equipment, annual federal recreational lands passes and hotel packages courtesy of Historic Hotels of America. The grand prize for the winning image is $10,000, followed by $5,000 and $3,000 for second and third place, in addition to outdoor gear and an annual pass.
Exploring America’s great outdoors is a fun family activity that contributes to a healthy, active lifestyle. The First Lady’s Let’s Move Outside goal is to get kids active so they see the physical activity they need not as a chore, but as a fun way to explore the country.
