Share the Experience Photo Contest
2012 Winners Announced and 2013 Contest Launches
We are proud to announce the winners of the 2012 Share the Experience photo contest. Hundreds of people throughout the country offered more than 16,000 photos of their outdoor experiences. It was a difficult task for our judges to select the amazing images of special moments for those who captured these breathtaking scenes on America’s federal lands.
As this announcement wraps up the 2012 contest, we could not think of a better time than now to launch the 2013 contest! Visit us at Share the Experience and start sharing your lifetime memories of your great outdoor adventures. The contest is open with a fresh look and great prizes. We have also added a sweepstakes this year in which you are automatically entered just for registering!
Grand Prize Winner
Bridger-Teton National Forest, Wyoming, by Katherine Hawkins
Our grand prize winner, Katherine Hawkins, was enjoying a family vacation on the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming. Katherine was kind enough to shed a little light on the photo our judges selected for the 2014 America the Beautiful -- the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass. She revealed to us that the way the photo came to be was not exactly the most pleasant part of their trip.
“In 2011 we did a five-day backpacking trip in the Wind River Range (Bridger-Teton National Forest) in Wyoming and camped at Titcomb Basin and Island Lake. One afternoon at Island Lake the mosquitoes were swarming and my daughter (3.5 years old at the time) and I took refuge in the tent. The view from our tent was gorgeous and the late afternoon light was perfect, so I grabbed my camera to capture the moment.”
Katherine let us know that she “submitted photos every week” and that this was the first photo contest she had ever entered. Pretty nice start if you ask us! Katherine also revealed that she is a “hobbyist” photographer whose interest in photography “grew from my love of the outdoors and taking pictures on our hiking trips.” We feel the same way Katherine!
Second Prize Winner
Tonto National Forest, Arizona, by Sue Cullumber
For our second place winner, Sue Cullumber was scouting the Salt River in the Tonto National Forest in Mesa, Arizona, as a possible location for her science class field trip, when she came to this scene. “A storm was building up and clouds just filled up the sky with the fantastic reflections in the water, the mountains in the background and the fisherman enjoying this amazing day – so I took advantage of this situation and shot several photos with this being my favorite.”
The judges obviously had similar feelings.
Third Prize Winner
Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, by Adam Jewell
Our third place winner from Adam Jewell comes with quite an amazing story.
“I quit my job on my 36th birthday and drove from Philadelphia to Utah to ski Snowbird Ski Resort for two months to get a break from the cubicle and computer screen. While in Utah, I discovered the National Parks, fell in love and have been living in and out of my car for the better part of three years. The road trip will go for about one more year (four years total) until all 49 of the National Parks in the lower 48 states have been experienced.”
In his travels Adam found himself at Isle Royale National Park where he took this gem. We hope that the prize money and a complimentary 2013 America the Beautiful -- the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass will help Adam continue his journey!
