Coyote Canyon Motorized Permits
The Coyote Canyon motorized route is an extreme trail specifically designated for rock-crawler type vehicles only. The route is one-way up a small canyon and down another. Although the route is only 0.65 miles long, it can easily take all day to navigate with refrigerator-sized boulders that must be traversed. Only heavily modified 4WD vehicles can make it through. This route provides rock-crawler enthusiasts an opportunity to challenge both their vehicles and skills in a unique setting. ATV’s, UTV’s, and motorcyles are not allowed.
Coyote Canyon is located approximately 13 miles south of Moab off the Black Ridge Road. A trailer parking area is located to the right at the State Route 191/Black Ridge Road junction. Access to Coyote Canyon is 1.5 miles from the parking area on the Black Ridge Road.
Permit & Season Information
Motorized use is only allowed with a permit. Permits are available for Fridays and Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., February 16 to November 30 with one permitted group per day and a maximum of seven vehicles per group. Permits must be obtained online and become available two months in advance at 8:00 a.m. MDT on a rolling daily window. A permit must in the possession of the trip leader. They are available to print 14 days in advance of the permitted date.
The Coyote Canyon gate will remain closed and locked to general public use. Permit holders will be issued the combination lock code with their permit and are required to lock the gates behind them as they enter or exit the canyon. The combination will be changed on a regular basis to limit access.
Need to Know
- Motorized use of Coyote Canyon is only allowed on Fridays and Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.. All vehicles must be off the route by 5 p.m..
- Vehicles must stay on the route shown on the Coyote Canyon designated route map. Travel in Kane Creek Wash outside the designated route is not allowed.
- Mufflers are required on all vehicles.
- Only full sized, 4WD vehicles are allowed. Motorcycles, ATV’s or UTV’s are not allowed.
- Winching from trees is not allowed.
- A fluid spill kit is required and must be used for all fluid leaks.
- Motorized use of Coyote Canyon is not allowed from Dec. 1 through Feb. 15 to protect deer winter range and to limit use during the muddy season.
- Organized groups and/or commercial permittees may utilize Coyote Canyon. Contact the BLM Moab Field Office for required special recreation permits. Competitive use is not allowed.
- Trailer parking is available at the junction of Highway 191 and the Black Ridge Road. No trailer parking or camping is available at the trailhead.

Reservation Fee: There is a non-refundable $6.00 reservation fee.

You may cancel anytime. The $6.00 reservation fee is non-refundable.
Change Policy:
Changes cannot be made once you have reserved a permit. If you choose to change your start date, you will have to cancel and reserve the desired date – reservation fee applies.
