Chilao Visitor Center, CA

US Forest Service

Overview

The Chilao Visitor Center is located in the Chilao Recreation Area. Once you visit this beautiful site, you'll understand why it was chosen years ago as the summer home of the Gabrielino Native Americans. Check the location of Chilao on the relief map to get a "bird's eye view" of the spectacular peaks and deep canyons that surround this area. (Descendants of the original Gabrielino tribe are pictured, exploring where their ancestors once lived.) Learn the history of this portion of the San Gabriel Mountains and the current recreational opportunities it provides. Learn to recognize some of the local wildlife, and play the "Who walked here?" game to see if you can identify the footprint of some of the local animals. Hike the trails that surround the Visitor Center, and enjoy the sights, sounds and fresh air of this great place!
