The Berkshire National Fish Hatchery was created when the family of John Sullivan Scully, a trout fisherman, entrusted their 148-acre retreat to the U.S. Government in 1914. For many years trout and small-mouth bass were cultured for restoration stocking. In more recent years the hatchery cultured Atlantic salmon as part of the Connecticut River Salmon Restoration Project. Unfortunately, budget cuts forced the hatchery to close in 1994.The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Berkshire Hatchery Foundation recently signed an agreement making the Berkshire Trout Hatchery the first and only hatchery in the National Fish Hatchery System run solely by volunteers.
