The Desert Experimental Range is one of a few dozen ecologically unique areas in the nation that have been set aside under international treaties for research. This area is preserved as an example of Great Basin ecology, and current studies are examining the interrelationship of humans and the land. Particular focus is on shrub restoration and balancing rangeland vegetation
