Killpecker Sand Dunes, WYBureau of Land Management
OverviewThe Killpecker Sand Dunes Recreation area consists of the Sand Dunes Wilderness Study Area (WSA) and the Sand Dunes Open Play area (open to off-road vehicle use. Mechanized vehicles are not permitted in the WSA. Vehicles may travel over the sand in the Open Play area only on those areas where there is no vegetation. Both sections contain water features called "flockets" which are tiny unique eco-systems in the dunes. If you want to hike and explore the dunes areas on foot, all the dunes east of Killpecker, stretching out across the Great Divide Basin, are open to low impact recreation, and dispersed camping. Important resources in this area include wildlife, cultural, scenic, and wilderness.
This site is near historic/cultural properties. Please do not collect or damage these resources.The Steamboat Mountain area is crucial birthing habitat for deer and elk. This area is closed to motor vehicles from May 1st through June 30th to protect this habitat. The BLM is required by law to maintain the natural character of WSAs. Recreational activities like hiking, hunting, and horseback riding are allowed while those that involve the use of motorized vehicles or mechanical transportation may not be allowed. Areas are generally signed with acceptable usages.
