Spring House

As you hike to Spring House, you will be rewarded with views of alcove sites in Navajo and Wickiup Canyons. Spring House is the largest unexcavated cliff dwelling in the park. It has 86 rooms and seven kivas. This site is extremely fragile. You will not enter the site, but will get excellent views of the cliff dwelling from a platform built at the south end of the village.

This 8-hour, 8-mile (12.9km) round-trip hike is very strenuous. Expect an unpaved, uneven trail with an elevation change of 1,500 feet, and steep drop-offs, one short ladder, and switchbacks. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots; bring your own lunch, snacks, and a minimum of one gallon (4 liters) of water per person. Shade is very limited, so bring a hat and sunscreen. Consider bringing binoculars and bird books, as well. This hike is appropriate for well -prepared hikers. Children must be able to walk the extent of the trail on their own without difficulty. This hike is available from May 26 to June 5 and September 1 to October 6, Sundays and Wednesdays. Hikers depart for Spring House at 8:00am from the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum. Meet the ranger for your hike at least 15 minutes in advance.

Upper Navajo Canyon Hike

Enjoy the autumn weather and fall color as you hike this historic trail, built in the 1930s by a Depression era organization, the Public Works Administration. You will view Pinkley House and several other small alcove sites, and experience two different communities as you descend from the drier mesa top pinyon-juniper woodlands to the mountain chaparral in the canyon bottom.

This moderate 5-hour, 6-mile (9.6km) round-trip hike is along an unpaved, uneven trail that descends 760 feet (232m), includes steep drop-offs, and switchbacks. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, bring snacks, and a minimum of 1/2 gallon (2 liters) of water per person. Shade is very limited, so bring a hat and sunscreen. Consider bringing binoculars and bird books, as well. This hike is appropriate for well-prepared hikers of any age. Children must be able to walk the extent of the trail on their own without difficulty. Upper Navajo Canyon Hike is available from September 5 to October 5 on Thursdays and Saturdays at 8:30am. Meet the ranger for your hike at least 15 minutes in advance.

Expansive canyon views, spectacular glimpses of cliff dwellings and Wetherill Mesa in the autumn reward hikers on this hike. We will introduce you to the story of the Ancestral Pueblo people, the environment in which they lived, and the ecology of the pinyon-juniper woodlands.

This moderate 4-hour, 4-mile (6.4km) round-trip hike follows an old fire road and an unpaved trail that crosses Wetherill Mesa. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots; bring your own lunch, and a minimum of 1/2 gallon (2 liters) of water per person. Shade is very limited, so bring a hat and sunscreen. Consider bringing binoculars and bird books, as well. This hike is appropriate for well-prepared hikers. Children must be able to walk the extent of the trail on their own without difficulty. Wetherill Mesa Experience is available from September 6 to October 4 Tuesday and Friday at 9:00 am. Meet the ranger at least 15 minutes in advance.

Oak Tree House

This 60-room site built on two ledges is one of the largest cliff dwellings in the park. Oak Tree House is a well preserved but fragile site that features plastered walls and varied architectural styles.

This 2-hour,1-mile (1.6km) round-trip hike is moderately strenuous. Expect a narrow, unpaved, uneven trail, with steps carved into the sandstone, steep drop-offs, and two ladders (4-foot and 15-foot) (1.2m to 4.6m), and a total elevation change of 200 feet (61m). In addition to up close views of this extremely fragile site, you will have stunning views of Cliff Canyon, Cliff Palace, and Sun Temple. Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and bring a minimum of 1/2 gallon (2 liters) of water per person. Please, do not bring any type of snack or food or sugary drinks. Archaeological sites are vulnerable to damage caused by rodents attracted to crumbs and dropped snacks. Shade is very limited, so bring a hat and sunscreen. Consider bringing binoculars and bird books, as well. This hike is appropriate for well-prepared hikers. Children must be able to walk the extent of the trail on their own without difficulty. Oak Tree House hike is available from May 28 to September 7 weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Hikers depart for Oak Tree House at 8:00am from Sun Temple on the Mesa Top Loop Road. Meet the ranger for your hike at least 15 minutes in advance.
