Juniper Flats Group Campground is one of only a few places to stay on beautiful Grand Island. The island's scenic natural beauty and interesting history make it a popular place for camping and other outdoor activities.
The Grand Island National Recreation Area boasts massive 300-foot wave-cut sandstone cliffs, 13,500 acres of lush forest, beaches of fine sand, winter ice caves and historic buildings and artifacts dating back as far as 2000 B.C.
The campground provides one large group tent campsite, equipped with tables and a campfire circle. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Bear poles and bear boxes are available for food storage.
Beginning December 8th 2023 at 10am, campsite reservations for Juniper Flats Group campsite for the 2024 camping season can be reserved by visiting the Grand Island National Recreation Area webpage https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10288329.
The Hiawatha National Forest is pleased to announce that all Grand Island campsites have been consolidated under the Grand Island National Recreation Area campground webpage on Recreation.gov. By consolidating all Grand Island campsites onto one facility page on Recreation.gov, visitors will no longer pay multiple reservations fees for a consecutive night stay to the campsites on Grand Island, but instead will pay one reservation fee for a consecutive night stay at multiple campsites.
Please keep in mind Juniper Flats Group campsite webpage will be retired on December 8th 2023 and all Grand Island camping reservations in the future should be made by visiting the Grand Island National Recreation Area https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10288329 webpage on Recreation.gov.
Through the Recreation Enhancement Act, a fee of $5.00/per person per trip is charged, and is included in the passenger ferry fee; season, family and boat entrance passes are also available.
This campsite can be reserved for up to 4 consecutive days. Reservations are required and can be made up to and including the day of arrival.
Juniper Flats Group Campground is located on the west side of Grand Island near the Waterfall and Mather beaches.
The area is heavily forested and primarily shady throughout the day. The campground is situated away from the beach, but the lake is visible from the site.
The island offers more than 30 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, complete with spectacular scenery. Visitors also enjoy fishing on the island. Anglers will find plentiful salmon, trout, perch, pike, walleye and bass. A variety of wildlife also make its home on the island.
Kayaking, canoeing and boating are also popular pastimes. Boats, however, must be anchored offshore because of the rocky lake bottom and heavy surf.
