About the Forest

The Naches Ranger District encompasses approximately 518,000 acres and extends from the town of Naches to the crest of the Cascades in the William O. Douglas, Norse Peak, and Goat Rocks Wilderness Areas, and White Pass area. It is bordered by the Cle Elum Ranger District to the north along the Manastash Ridge divide, by the Yakama Indian Nation to the south, and Mt. Rainier National Park to the west. This pass provides access to trailheads ranging from high alpine settings to lower elevation valley bottoms, for both front country and wilderness access. Trailheads offer information boards and limited parking and may also contain bathrooms and hitching posts for stock.

Trailheads vary in elevation so open dates vary. However, most trailheads are open from May through October. Trail maintenance efforts are ongoing throughout the summer field season, so it is recommended that visitors seek trail condition information before their trip. If you are entering wilderness, please ensure you obtain the permits available at trailhead access points and follow all regulations.

Chinook Pass Overlook Trailhead

At an elevation of 5800 feet, this trailhead offers spectacular views of the valley below and provides access to the Norse Peak and William O. Douglas Wilderness areas. It also provides a connector to the Pacific Crest Trail, the Naches Peak Loop Trail and access to Mt. Rainier National Park. The trailhead has information boards, a large parking lot, bathrooms, and a stock ramp. Additional parking can be found on the opposite side of Highway 410.

The pass for Chinook Pass Overlook Trailhead can only be purchased on-site, using cash, check, or a credit card through the Recreation.gov mobile app.
