Music in Mammoth Cave National Park has been an important part of the cave’s over 200-year modern history with classical musicians, choirs, and contemporary artists composing and often performing their music inside the cave. The park is partnering with the Louisville Orchestra to present a historic musical performance by Teddy Abrams and the Louisville Orchestra with special guest Yo-Yo Ma to celebrate how the grandeur and fascination of our natural environments, like caves, and deep human histories can inspire creativity for the artistic world and reach new audiences. The performance area is inside Mammoth Cave in a large open area known as Bunker Hill. The cave is a natural environment, with low lighting and a standing surface that is smooth but uneven. The cave has a temperature of around 54ºF (12ºC). There are no seating options in the cave and the performance time is estimated at 45 min – 1 hour.
There are no restrooms at the performance space, but portable toilets will be available near the cave’s natural entrance.
Cell phones, cameras, video recording equipment, flashlights, and headlamps are prohibited during the cave performances. Lights from these devices detract from the ambiance of the natural dark cave environment and causes distractions to the performers and other audience members.
Parking for the event will be located at the Mammoth Cave National Park Visitor Center. Ticket holders must present their tickets to access the parking lot. Due to the limited availability of parking spaces, all ticket holders are encouraged to arrive early and carpool to the park on the day of the event. The park expects roadways to be congested on the day of the performances.
While the cave is protected from severe weather and rain, the event may be cancelled if hazardous weather seems likely to create a safety concern for accessing the cave. Participants should be prepared for the possibility of inclement weather on the outdoor hillside that leads to the entrance of the cave.
Evacuation from the cave to a hospital for medical attention could take several hours; visitors with known heart or respiratory conditions, poor circulation, or difficulty walking and climbing stairs should carefully consider their limitations.
The performance will begin on time. Those with event tickets that arrive after the audience has left the visitor center, will forfeit your ticket and ability to access the performance.
Mammoth Cave National Park is located in the central time zone and observes daylight savings time.
Firearms, pepper spray, mace, knives or weapons of any type are not permitted inside the cave or in the visitor center.
Child strollers and infant backpack carriers are prohibited in the cave for visitor safety reasons. Front carriers are permitted. Youth under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.
Attendees should be aware that several media outlets may be filming the day's activities. As a member of the audience, you may appear during any of the live broadcasts or other recorded filming productions.
