Mount Blue Sky Recreation Area Timed Tickets
Provides access for one private vehicle or motorcycle to access Mount Goliath and Summit Lake Park from September 8th through October 4th 2026 (Summit of Mt Blue Sky is closed to vehicle access). See below for additional information. Full closure of Mount Blue Sky is weather dependent and could close prior to the above dates listed. Under the new locally managed operating structure at the Mount Blue Sky Recreation Area, federal recreation passes, including America the Beautiful and Federal Lands Access Passes, are no longer accepted.
Hikers and Bicyclists accessing the Mt. Blue Sky Recreation Area from below the Welcome station are free.
Mount Goliath is a peak on the shoulders of Mount Blue Sky. The Mount Goliath Research Natural Area contains 160 acres set aside for the protection, study, interpretation and enjoyment of the Rocky Mountain bristlecone pine. Stop and visit the gardens, Dos Chappell Nature Center and hike through the bristlecone pine. The building, exhibits, and grounds are the result of a cooperative effort between the Denver Botanic Gardens, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, and the U.S. Forest Service. Summit Lake Park is at 12,840 feet and offers incredible opportunities to explore the alpine tundra and an accessible trail offers a short hike to the Chicago Lakes Overlook.
If you are arriving at any of the fee use areas (Mt. Goliath Nature Center, Summit Lake) prior to 7:00 AM and are parked in the fee area you are required to display your reservation for the 7:00 AM entry time.
If the 7:00 AM entry time is sold out, please do not buy the 9:00 AM reservation and enter prior to 9:00 AM. In this case you need to enter between 9:00-11:00 AM.

Need to Know
- Reservation Details
There is NO reliable cell phone service in the area. Please purchase your reservation ahead of time, at home or before leaving the towns of Idaho Springs or Bergan Park.
The reservation for Mount Blue Sky is for the reserved date and time listed on this ticket and for day use only.
- Access Areas
Provides access for one private vehicle. This ticket includes Mount Goliath and Summit Lake Park. The average time spent along the Scenic Drive is 2 hours.
- Ticket Validation
Print or download your reservation to your phone prior to leaving a near by town with cell service. There is NO cell service at the Welcome Station.
Be ready to present a printed or digital copy of reservation at the facility Welcome Station. If you have a printed ticket, please place on dash of vehicle; photo ID will be required.
- Cancellations & Refunds
Cancellations must be made up to 24 hours in advance for refund minus $2 processing fee. No refunds for no shows or cancellations less than 24 hours in advance. Cancellations must be processed by reservation holders through Recreation.gov. The welcome station is unable to process cancellation requests.
Refunds due to weather closures will not be issued.
- Regulations
Tickets are non-transferable and cannot be sold, copied or auctioned.
Camping and campfires are not allowed within one-half mile of the Mount Blue Sky corridor and the entire Summit Lake Flats.
Feeding or attracting wildlife is prohibited.
Pets
Pets must be kept on a handheld leash at all times, and they cannot be kept in an unattended vehicle.
- Driving the Scenic Road
The Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway climbs more than 7,000 feet in just 28 miles, reaching an altitude of 14,130 feet. The views are breath taking, but the road is in condition is variable and has no guardrails so be prepared for slow and possible difficult driving conditions. Drivers should be aware there are many bicyclists that cycle this road.
The maximum allowable length for vehicles is 30 feet due to the narrow steep and winding road. Motorhomes are not recommended.
- Weather/Hazards
Conditions can change quickly and drastically on Mount Blue Sky. The road can close any day throughout the summer due to winter-like conditions.
