Overview

The nonelectric units are available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site. Hussy Mountain is a primitive campground offering three group camping loops. Each has parking for 4 or 5 vehicles with trailers, wooden picnic tables, fire rings, hitching rails, garbage containers, and direct access to horse trails. Potable water is available. Vaught toilets are available in each of the camping loops. East Fork Dry Run Creek is located adjacent to the campground as a source of water for horses. 

Horse owners need to have a current negative Coggins test certificate for any horse they take to a public place for recreation use in Virginia.

Natural Features

Hussy Mountain Horse Campground is in the east fork of the Dry Run Valley. The area is well-shaded with hardwoods, hemlocks, and pines. The elevation is approximately 3,000 feet. Summer days are warm with temperatures in the upper 70’s to low 90’s, and evenings cool down typically into the 60’s. The campground is shaded with hardwoods and pines.  

Recreation

Hussy Mountain is in the east fork of the Dry Run Valley. The area is well-shaded with hardwoods, hemlocks, and pines. Dry Run provides fishing, wading, watering horses. The camp provides access to several trails: East Fork Divide Trail (4617), Dry Run Gap Trail (4613), and Highlands Horse Trail (337).

  • The bridge connecting the loops across the stream is closed. The front loop is the only loop available for camping at this time.

<p>Hussy Mountain Horse Campground is located at 1195 CC Camp Road, Speedwell, VA approximately 18 miles south of Wytheville. <strong>From I-81:</strong> Take Exit 70 or 72 at Wytheville, Virginia onto US 11 (Main Street). On the west end of town, US 11 turns off and Main Street becomes US 21 south. Follow US 21 south for approximately 14.5 miles to Forest Service Road 14 (CC Camp Road) about 3 miles south of Speedwell. Turn left onto FS 14 and follow it east about 2 miles to the campground on your right.  </p> <p>From <strong>Independence, VA</strong> follow US 21 North for 14 miles. Turn right onto FS 14 and follow it east about 2 miles to the campground on your right.  </p>
