Overview

Camp Four and a Half Cabin is located along the Kings River above Pine Flat Reservoir at an elevation of 1,100 feet in Sequoia National Forest. The cabin sits within the Giant Sequoia National Monument, about 60 miles east of Fresno, California.

The cabin was built in 1957 as a residence and office by Forest Service rangers and their families until the early1980's. Dedicated volunteers and employees restored the cabin and converted it to an overnight rental for the public.

Facilities

A generator provides electricity for the cabin. It is equipped with a heater and swamp cooler for temperature control.

The two-bedroom, one-bath cabin sleeps six people. There are two twin beds, a queen and a double hide-a-bed, all with pillows. The kitchen has a propane stove and refrigerator, kitchen table and benches and dishes, pots and pans. The living area offers a couch and rocking chair.

There is a tub/shower combination and toilet in the bathroom. Toilet paper, kitchen soap and garbage bags are provided.

Outdoors there are five lawn chairs, a grill and picnic table. There is also room outdoors to pitch tents for additional guests.

Guests should bring linens, towels and all food items.

Natural Features

The cabin sits along the beautiful Kings River. In the spring, the region is ablaze with wildflowers and high water attracts whitewater boaters. The Kings River is classified as a Wild and Scenic River, and is within the spectacular Kings River Gorge, one of the deepest canyons in the United States. The cabin is also far away from the lights of any city or town, offering a dark and starry night sky.

Recreation

Guests can fish, swim, kayak or whitewater raft in the Kings River. The river is swift and cold and can be dangerous at peak flows in April through June. Enter the river at your own risk. The river becomes tranquil in late summer and fall. The section of the Kings River from Garnet Dike to Pine Flat Lake is open to fishing year round with a two fish limit. A California fishing license is required.

There are trails on both the north and south side of the river for hiking and horseback riding and roads for off-road vehicles.

The area is great for wildlife viewing, bird watching, star gazing, and artistic pursuits such as painting and photography.

Important Notices

• Guests are expected to clean the entire cabin upon departure; all cleaning supplies, including a vacuum, are provided. Please bring your own dish soap and sponges for cleaning your dishes.

• The cabin is locked with a combination lock; guests should call the Hume Lake Ranger Station at 559-338-2251 five days before arrival for the cabin door combination

• Guests pack out all garbage

• Absolutely no pets.

• No additional RVs can be parked at the cabin.

• This cabin is to be used as a Recreational Rental Cabin for families and friends. It is not intended to be used by large groups, or as a base camp for reunions, meetings, or receptions.

• The cabin is not close to either of the National Parks or any of the Giant sequoia groves within the Giant Sequoia National Monument. It is secluded, quiet, and next to the lower portion of the Kings River.

• Contact the Ranger District before arrival to confirm that there are no conditions, such as fire or weather, that might affect their visit
• This is bear country and food must be stored properly; (learn more about bear and other safety precautions)

Directions

From Fresno, California take Highway 180 to Academy Avenue. Turn left (north) and proceed one mile to the intersection with Belmont Avenue. Turn right (east) on Belmont. Proceed east on Belmont which turns into Trimmer Springs Road. In about 13 miles you will pass through the tiny community of Piedra, your last opportunity to purchase supplies and gas. This store is only open during the day. After about 42 miles you will cross the Kings River bridge and continue onto paved Forest Service Road 12S01. The road turns to dirt after a mile, and the cabin is located nearly a mile further down 12S01.
