Grandview Playground Shelter
New River Gorge National Park & Preserve
The Playground Picnic Shelter is the main shelter at Grandview. It is closest to the main playground and ball fields, located just past the amphitheater.
The Playground Picnic Shelter at Grandview is the largest and can accommodate up to 200 people. It is ideal for large family reunions or picnics. It offers a covered eating area, three charcoal grills, and six electrical outlets. Restrooms and drinking fountain are nearby.
Need to Know
- Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all areas at Grandview.
- Potable water is available at restrooms and nearby drinking fountains.
Decorations are allowed, provided they do not damage the structure (i.e. no staples or nails) and are cleaned up on departure.
- Bouncy houses, fireworks, dunk tanks, and wading pools are not allowed.
- Commercial activity (i.e. sales) is prohibited.
- Use of the pavilion for weddings and wedding receptions requires a Special Use Permit. Call 304-465-6517 for permit information.
You may rearrange picnic tables at the shelter for your event. You are responsible for returning the picnic tables to the original location at the conclusion of the event.
Keep your confirmation notice with you in the event of a conflict with a non-reservation party.
Pets must be kept on a leash at all times.

- Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more.
Cutting, destroying, digging, removing or possessing any tree, shrub, or other plant is prohibited. Digging holes, moving rocks, or constructing viewing platforms is prohibited. In no instance will anything be affixed to trees, bushes, or structures. Any signs or other notices to participants will be a stand-alone, temporary measure only.
Natural Features
Grandview became part of New River Gorge National River in 1990, after more than 50 years as one of West Virginia's most popular day use state parks. The area offers spectacular views of the New River and stunning displays of rhododendron. At the Main Overlook, 1,400 feet above the river, you see an active railway and the town of Quinnimont, where coal companies first shipped coal out of the gorge in 1873.
Nearby Attractions
The city of Beckley is approximately 12 miles from Grandview and offers a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, and hotels. Popular attractions include a children's museum and Exhibition Coal Mine.
Recreation
The Grandview area of New River Gorge National River features five hiking trails, overlooks, a seasonal visitor center, ranger-led activities, summer outdoor dramas (Theatre West Virginia), playgrounds, volleyball court, baseball field, and basketball court.

Driving Directions
To reach Grandview from Beckley follow I-64 East five miles to Exit 129 B. From Lewisburg follow I-64 West forty miles to Exit 129. From either exit, turn right and follow Route 9 North six miles to Grandview.
