During the Months of July-October, Tawny Field Cockroaches can be found in large numbers at Camp Gateway Sandy Hook. These cockroaches are primarily outdoor insects and are commonly found in grassy fields, meadows, and woodland edges. Unlike the German and American Cockroach, the Tawny Field Cockroach does not bite or pose a health risk, nor do they reproduce inside homes, restaurants or other buildings. The Tawny Cockroach is thought to be an important food source for birds and other wildlife. Visitors to the area should expect to encounter these insects.
