Need to Know

• • BOAT IN CAMPING ON TOMALES BAY: Boat in sites are ONLY reachable by Boat. ALL Tomales Bay permits require use of a boat, including Group sites on Marshall Beach and Tomales Beach- You MUST arrive by boat ONLY. Beaches are not assigned for permits up to 14 people; campers choose available beaches after launching. Boat In “A” permits are for 1-6 people and Boat In “B” permits are for 7-14 people. A and B permits may camp at any beaches allowable on the “Tomales Bay Boat In Camping Map” found on the Point Reyes National Seashore website. Campers with Boat-In permits for "Marshall Beach Group Boat In 1 or 2" and "Tomales Beach Group Boat In" are required to camp at Marshall or Tomales Beach respectively. 
  • BOAT IN- NO ASSIGNED SITES OR BEACHES: There are no “sites” on Tomales Bay and the camping is primitive camping on several allowable beaches along the west shore of Tomales Bay. See our “Tomales Bay Boat In Camping Map” on our official Park Service website, for allowable beaches. Beaches are shared where multiple parties may occupy the same beach. Camping is permitted only on the west side of Tomales Bay from Kilkenny Beach to areas north except for Duck Cove, Fruit Tree Beach, Laird’s Landing, Pelican Point, Hog Island, Duck Island, and Jack’s Beach where camping is prohibited. 
  • BOAT IN CAMPING PERMITS: You do NOT need to check in at the Bear Valley Visitor Center. Your email confirmation with order/reservation number is your permit. Print out your email confirmation and show Rangers your email confirmation in the field when asked. We do not provide parking permits for overnight parking for Boat In camping since there are no launch points inside the National Seashore.
  • BOAT IN SITE AMENITIES: There are NO amenities on Tomales Bay beaches for Boat-in camping except there are vault toilets on Marshall Beach and Tomales Beach. There is NO potable water on Tomales Bay for Boat In camping- bring your own. Campers must bring a wag bag or portable toilet if not using the vault toilets at Marshall and Tomales Beaches. Bring “bear canisters” or other raccoon, and rodent-proof food storage devices. Remember to pack out all your trash.
  • BEACH FIRE PERMITS: If fire danger allows, beach fire permits may be obtained at the Bear Valley Visitor Center and may be used on any beach at Point Reyes National Seashore, including Tomales Bay Beaches. 
  • BOAT IN- LAUNCHING POINTS AND PARKING FOR CAMPING ON TOMALES BAY: There are NO launch points located in the National Seashore for Boat In Camping. Arrange for launching and overnight parking OUTSIDE of the National Seashore. Public launch sites where vehicles may be parked overnight for a fee are Tomales Bay Resort in Inverness on the west side of Tomales Bay and the Miller Boat Launch north of Marshall on the east side. Other launch points where overnight parking is NOT allowed include Chicken Ranch Beach near Inverness on the west side of Tomales Bay. Your Point Reyes Boat In camping permit does NOT include launch fees or overnight parking. You will be launching and parking your vehicle outside of the boundaries of Point Reyes National Seashore.
  • BOAT IN WEATHER AND SAFETY: Expect calm winds in the mornings with increasing winds from the northwest in the afternoon. Crossing Tomales Bay during Small Craft Advisories issued by the National Weather Service can be hazardous. You are responsible to check for safe weather and tide conditions. You should be an experienced kayaker, or going with an experienced group 
  • NO DOGS OR OTHER PETS: Dogs and other pets are not allowed on Tomales bay Boat in camping beaches
