Need to Know

• It is easy to underestimate distances between destination points in the islands. Some of the islands are 15 to 20 miles off shore. Allow plenty of time to accomplish your intended route. We suggest paddling no more than 10 miles per day for beginners or 15 miles per day for seasoned paddlers. Wearing a Personal Flotation Device and wetsuit while sea kayaking is recommended. If you are using a power boat be sure you have plenty of fuel because there are no fueling stations in the park.

  Lake Superior is known for sudden storms. Boaters should carry a weather radio and check weather conditions before boating to the Apostle Islands. Check the offshore marine forecast for western Lake Superior at: http://www.crh.noaa.gov/.

  Except for Stockton Presque Isle campsites 2-19, all permits are for the specific campsite assigned on the permit and are nontransferable. For sites 2-19 in the Presque Isle campground on Stockton Island, the permit guarantees a campsite, but specific campsite assignments are not made. These campsites are occupied on a first-come, first-served basis.

  Visitors using camping zones will not have any facilities. It may be challenging to find a nice site to camp. Carry a trowel and be prepared to dig a cathole for human waste. Be prepared to hang your food cache in a tree at least 12' from the ground and 6' from the trunk of the tree. A camp stove is recommended for cooking. Campfires in camping zones are only permitted on the beach below the vegetation line.

  Access to island campsites for winter camping depends on the amount and thickness of ice cover on the lake. This varies greatly from year to year. Call the park for the latest information about ice conditions.
