Need to Know
- Dolly Varden Lake Cabin is a 16' X 18' rustic log cabin located on the north shore of Dolly Varden Lake. Built in the summer of 2005, this cabin offers seclusion and fair fishing for Arctic char and rainbow trout. Area wildlife includes moose, black and brown bears, and wolves. Hunting is allowed for these species in season. In the winter there is ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The cabin contains two bunk beds, a table with benches, countertop for food preparation, wood stove, splitting maul, crosscut saw, broom, shovel, water bucket, fire extinguisher, established campfire ring, picnic table, and an outhouse. Access to the cabin is by boat, snowshoes, or skis. To access the parking lot and boat launch for the cabin, turn off at mile 83.4 on the Sterling Highway (Alaska Route 1). Follow Swanson River Road approximately 14 miles to Dolly Varden Campground. Refer to USGS map Kenai C-3. GPS coordinates: Latitude: 60.714123, Longitude: -150.774241
- Users must provide a U. S. Coast Guard-approved flotation device for each passenger transported on boats. When using power boats, a "no-wake" restriction applies to Dolly Varden Lake. Dolly Varden Lake is closed to public aircraft operation and snowmachining. The seclusion of this cabin necessitates being prepared to handle any emergency situation. Inclement weather may cause an unexpected extension of your trip. Be familiar with ADF&G and Refuge specific hunting and fishing regulations. Bringing a personal cooking stove is recommended. Carry in potable water or boil surface water 5 minutes before drinking. Pack out your trash.
