Highlands Scenic Byway
Overview
Highlands Scenic Byway is managed by Department of Transportation. This National Forest Scenic Byway weaves through a landscape of diverse vegetation, scenic views, unique geological formations and an abundance of wildlife. In addition, there are numerous historic places-the remnants of a once thriving mining community.

Navigating the Byway:
Driving the Byway
- Approximately 20 miles west of Lexington, the Highlands Scenic Byway is accessible from I-64 at exit 43. Head south on Forest Road 447 to begin your tour of the byway.
- Follow Forest Road 447 until you reach State Highway 654. Continue along State Highway 654 until you reach Collierstown Road.
- Continue driving on Colliertown Road until you reach North Mountain Road. Turn right onto North Mountain Road, which will take you underneath I-64.
- Drive northeast on North Mountain Road until you return to Forest Road 447.
