Overview

Originally constructed in 1891, the building that now constitutes the Riggs Washington D.C. was the former site of the Washington Loan and Trust Company. The financial institution was the largest of its kind in the city for years, eventually joining together with Riggs National Bank in the 1950s. The bank financed many important projects in its prime, such as the renovation to the U.S. Capitol Building during the Civil War, and the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Transformed into a boutique hotel during the 1990s, the building came under the ownership of the Lore Group in 2017. Debuting as the Riggs Washington D.C. two years later, the location has since become one of the most vibrant destinations in the District. This wonderful historic hotel is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
