The Fort Churchill to Wellington Back Country Byway is a 67-mile Type I and Type II route through Lyon and Douglas counties in western Nevada. Beginning at Fort Churchill State Historic Park, the byway follows part of the Pony Express National Historic Trail and passes the Carson River, Dayton, the historic Como Mining District, the Pine Nut Mountains, Burbank Canyons Scenic Area, and Smith Valley before ending near Wellington. Fort Churchill was established in 1860 and served travelers, settlers, the Pony Express, and the Overland Route. Along the drive, visitors encounter ranchlands, mining history, rugged desert mountains, and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada, Carson River Valley, and Smith Valley. The Pine Nut Mountains provide opportunities to observe wild horses and wildlife. The route includes approximately 38 miles of Type I road and 29 miles of Type II road. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and four-wheel drive may be needed for the entire route. Allow 4 to 5 hours.
