The Lovelock Cave Back Country Byway is an approximately 20-mile Type I and Type II route from Lovelock to Lovelock Cave Historic Site. The route begins among irrigated agricultural lands, crosses the Humboldt River, and continues through the Humboldt Sink beneath shorelines left by ancient Lake Lahontan. Lovelock Cave, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was used by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years and is known as the Cradle of Great Basin Archaeology. Archaeological work at the cave yielded duck decoys, baskets, textiles, and other artifacts. The historic site includes an information kiosk, a self-guided nature trail, a covered picnic table, and a vault toilet. The roads are dirt and gravel, and conditions may change after wet weather. Allow 2 to 3 hours to enjoy the byway.
