The Bitter Springs Back Country Byway is a 28-mile Type II, single-lane dirt route through the Muddy Mountains of Clark County, Nevada. The drive passes colorful sandstone, dry washes, Bitter Ridge, burnt-red buttes, Buffington Pockets, Colorock Quarry, and broad views of Bitter Spring Valley and Lake Mead. Visitors can also see petroglyphs and pictographs and remnants of the historic American Borax Mine, including foundations, buildings, cisterns, adits, and tunnels. High-clearance vehicles are required, and four-wheel drive is recommended. The route is remote, has no services, and may become impassable when wet. Allow 2 to 4 hours.
