One of America's longest running hotels, the St. James was built along the banks of the Mississippi River in 1875 in Red Wing, Minnesota, the era's largest wheat-trade market. Civic-minded businessmen of the time recognized the need for a world-class hotel and commissioned the design of this distinctive five-story Italianate structure. The first guests marveled at the hotel's modern features, including steam heat, hot and cold running water, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Its renowned restaurants became a regular stop on the nearby Empire Builder rail line. Today, the St. James has been faithfully restored to its original 19th-century character; it serves as a landmark for both business and leisure travelers drawn to scenic Red Wing.
