Small Gathering Skaters Cabin day-user shelter is located on the shore of the southwest corner of Mendenhall Lake, near the Mendenhall Glacier. The cabin was constructed in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and is made with natural stone. The shelter has a maximum capacity of 20 people. The maximum group size allowed with this reservation is 74 people. The cabin is equipped with a covered porch and two movable picnic tables along with a wood stove. Dimensions are 31' x 21'. Electricity is not available. Outside facilities include a large group fire ring in front of the cabin and a stationary wood picnic table and a fire ring adjacent to the southwest corner of the cabin. The area is accessed by a trail that meets accessibility guidelines and leads to the beach. A potable water hydrant and accessible vault toilets are also provided. The picnic area has two additional picnic sites with fire rings and tables designated for non-group use (they are not a part of this reservable site). Bears frequent the area; pack-in, pack-out garbage (on-site garbage cans not intended for large amounts). Bear Safety on the Tongass Bring whatever firewood is needed. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a wood pallet fire is prohibited. Stay on developed paths so tree root systems are not damaged. Provide sufficient garbage bags for your group. Pack-it-in, Pack-it-out. Garbage cans on site are not intended for large amounts. It is prohibited to leave refuse, debris or litter or dump refuse, debris or trash. Upon departure, visitors must extinguish fires in fireplace, fire pit and grills; clean grill and table; pick up and removal of all trash, equipment and materials brought into the picnic shelter area. Possessing a glass container is prohibited. The area is closed from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. It is prohibited to have a fire outside a fireplace, grill or fire ring. Please ensure all wood fits inside the fireplace or fire ring. No pallets or pieces of pallets; no lumber with nails or staples. It is prohibited to damage any property of the United States. No staples or nails may be attached to any shelter. For large groups 75 or greater, an additional Special Use permit is required. The Forest Service Reservation fee is $10 per hour with a two-hour minimum A Recreation.gov online processing fee is $8 per transaction Skater's Cabin is approximately a 13-mile drive from downtown Juneau. Head north on Egan Dr/Glacier Highway for about 8 miles to Mendenhall Loop Road. Turn right and travel about 2.2 miles. Turn left to stay on Mendenhall Loop Road. After a mile and a half, turn right on Montana Creek Road. Continue another half mile on to Skater's Cabin Road. Skater's Cabin is on the right side of the road. Access to Juneau is via the Alaska Marine Highway or via Alaska Airlines.
