First built in 1776 on Sullivan’s Island, Fort Moultrie served as an active military installation through the end of World War II and reflects 171 years of seacoast defense strategy and technology. Sullivan’s Island long served as Charleston Harbor’s first line of defense against disease or foreign invasion. For many, it was the first stop for incoming ships with sick passengers to quarantine before entering the city, including African captives brought to North America to be sold into slavery. Approximately 40% of the 400,000 enslaved Africans entered the country at the port of Charleston.
