Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site Tours
Visitors will see the partially furnished cottage and join their guide in conversation about the Roosevelt legacy while looking out over the Hudson River Valley.
Franklin Roosevelt built Top Cottage at the eastern most end of his estate on land purchased in 1937 on what his cousin and close friend Margaret Suckley called "the nicest Hill in Dutchess County." FDR imagined Top Cottage as a place where he could return to private life after his second term as president. When he was elected to an unprecedented third term in 1940, Roosevelt realized that the little retreat would be an excellent place to "escape the mob" at Springwood. He also brought close friends and political allies there to discuss the state of the world or simply relax. Like Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill Cottage, the FDR Library and the addition to Springwood, Top Cottage was designed by FDR to emulate the Dutch colonial architecture found throughout the Hudson River Valley. FDR planned the cottage with accessibility in mind to accommodate his wheelchair and give him greater independence. Top Cottage became part of the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in May 2001.

Need to Know
- When is Top Cottage available and how do I get there?
Check in at the Wallace Center at the Home of FDR National Historic Site. 4079 Albany Post Rd. Hyde Park, NY 12538.
Departure is from the Henry A. Wallace Visitor Center. Arrive at least ten minutes early to avoid missing the shuttle.
Transportation is provided by the National Park Service. If an accessible option or other special arrangements are needed - please contact us in advance at 845-229-5320 at least 1 day before visit.
This experience is not recommended for visitors under the age of 12.
You must check in 10 minutes prior to departure time. Tickets will not be held and there will be no refunds processed if the shuttle departure is missed.

Please do not drive to Top Cottage as there is no public parking available and you risk a ticket. Seating is limited to 12 people.
