The French-Canadian voyageurs, who were pivotal in opening the Northwestern United States, passed through what is now Voyageurs National Park on their historic route from Grand Portage to the Lake Athabasca region. They transported a variety of goods in large North Canoes that were built by the indigenous Ojibwe out of birch bark, cedar, spruce resin, and roots.
You can learn about the adventurous life of a Voyageur and try your hand at paddling a 26-foot replica of a North Canoe by reserving your spot in a ranger-led North Canoe interpretive program out of the Rainy Lake or Ash River visitor centers.
