Shenango River Lake stretches 11 miles up its namesake river, covering over 11,000 acres. The shore is lined with a northern hardwood forest of shady and colorful trees such as Black Cherry, Beech, Maple and Hemlock. Deer, turkey and other small game animals are plentiful, with excellent opportunities to observe osprey and eagles in the area.
Visitors will not hand-carry weapons into restricted areas. Project managers will inform visitors that weapons of any kind are prohibited in restricted areas.
Project managers will visually assess visitors to ensure they are appropriately dressed for the location they are touring. Visitors who appear overdressed for the weather, who appear to be concealing items under their clothing, or who by word or action do not comply with the project manager’s directions may be denied entry to the restricted area.
Project managers will inform visitors that photography is prohibited in restricted areas. Cameras and mobile phones will not be taken into restricted areas and should be stored in visitors’ vehicle(s).
Visitors will not hand carry items (backpacks, purses, diaper bags, water bottles, etc.) into restricted areas. Before a tour, project managers will notify visitors that all hand-carried items must be stowed in the visitors’ vehicle(s).
The area you are about to enter has been declared a restricted area by the authority of the Pittsburgh District Commander in accordance with the provisions of the directive issued by the Secretary of Defense, pursuant to the provisions of § 21, Internal Security Act of 1950. Unauthorized entry is prohibited; therefore, you must remain with this group at all times. All persons entering here are liable to search. Weapons, cameras, and hand-carried items are prohibited in this area. Photography, and making notes, drawings, maps, or graphic representations of this area or its activities are prohibited unless specifically authorized by the Commander. Any such material found in the possession of unauthorized persons will be confiscated.
All visitors regardless of age will sign the project site’s visitor control log (log) prior to entering the restricted area. Adult chaperones will supervise minors while signing the log and will complete the log for minors who are unable to sign or write their names.

Participants must check-in with the Park Ranger at the gate just outside of Shenango Dam at least 5 minutes prior to the tour start time. Otherwise, reservations will be cancelled, and tickets forfeited. No refunds will be offered. Please note: Shenango Lake does not charge nor collect any fees for participation in dam tours, however, Recreation.gov charges a non-refundable reservation service fee of $1 per ticket. There is no cost associated with entry to Shenango Dam For safety reasons, tours will not take place during thunderstorms or severe weather. Additionally, walks may be cancelled due to flood operations, higher security threat levels, or maintenance.
