Explore Muir Woods National Monument at night with a special ranger-led tour! Established in 1908, this 550-acre National Monument protects an old growth forest of coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), the tallest type of tree in the world. With nearly 2 miles of flat, firm-surfaced trails in the heart of the forest, Muir Woods is one of the most accessible coast redwood forests in the country and is less than a 1-hour drive from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. These 2-hour tours start around twilight in front of the Muir Woods Visitor Center where a park ranger will orient you to the forest’s history and ecology before taking you on a guided walk along the Redwood Creek and Hillside Trails. As you pass through landmarks like Founders Grove and Cathedral Grove, the interactive ranger program invites you to open up your senses to the natural environment and reflect on our connections to the forest and to each other. Tours are limited to 30 people per tour and scheduled at least two weeks in advance based on ranger availability. Portions of the tour may not be ADA accessible. Please let us know of any reasonable accommodation you may need in advance of your tour date.
Please arrive 15 minutes before program start time for check in. Tours begin promptly at their designated time.
There is NO cell or data service at Muir Woods. Please print your tour ticket or download to your phone prior to arrival. We discourage scheduling a rideshare service to leave the park.
Parking reservations are always required for all vehicles arriving during daytime hours until 1 hour before park closing. Please reserve parking on www.GoMuirWoods.com for the date of your tour if you plan to arrive more than 1 hour prior to park closing time (separate parking reservation fees apply).
This tour is subject to cancellation due to inclement weather, poor air quality, or staffing issues. Participants will be notified of cancellation as soon as possible. Please check our website for current alerts and conditions.
We strongly recommend bringing a headlamp or flashlight. It can get cold at night, so layers are recommended as well. Bring water if desired.
Glass containers, alcohol, drones, and pets are not allowed. If you bring valuables to Muir Woods, we recommend taking them on the tour. Car break-ins do happen.
No vehicles over 35 feet are allowed on the roads leading into Muir Woods.
Tickets are released 14 days prior to the tour date at 8am pt/11am et. Reservations are only available online or by calling the Recreation.gov Contact Center at 877-444-6777.
This tour is free except for a $1.00 per ticket reservation fee. There are no refunds for the $1.00 reservation fee under any circumstances.
