Acadia is among the most popular and smallest national parks in the United States with more than 3.5 million visits a year. The National Park Service has developed a Transportation Plan to reduce severe traffic and parking congestion so visitors can plan ahead and have a more enjoyable visit. The purpose of the plan is to manage vehicle access — not people. The plan includes a vehicle reservation system for the Cadillac Summit Road and Sand Beach Entrance sections of the Park Loop Road during the busiest times of day from June through October. The vehicle reservation system will increase safety, reduce congestion, and ensure your ability to park your vehicle when you arrive at your destination.
To prepare for a full season of vehicle reservations in 2021, the National Park Service is conducting a pilot from October 1 to 18, 2020, at the two most popular sections of the Park Loop Road:
• Cadillac Summit Road from 4:30 am to 6:30 pm
• Sand Beach Entrance from 7 am to 5 pm (includes vehicle access to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and trailheads for Ocean Path, The Beehive, Great Head, and Gorham Mountain)
Cadillac Summit Road - Daytime and Sand Beach Entrance reservations are sold on the hour and half-hour with a 30-minute window for entry starting at the reservation time. Cadillac Summit Road - Sunrise reservations are sold with a 2 1/2 hour window for entry starting at 4:30 am.
Vehicle reservations are for a timed entry, which allows visitors to remain in that area for as long as desired. While the vehicle reservation reduces competition for parking, it does not assign a specific parking space. If you leave the reservation area with your vehicle, you will need another reservation to re-enter.
Vehicle reservation holders must have a valid park entrance pass in addition to purchasing a vehicle reservation. The vehicle reservation fee is not discounted for annual and lifetime pass holders.
Vehicle reservations are not required for other areas of the park, or for pedestrians and bicyclists.
